What Exactly Is A Handmade Bridle?

What Exactly Is A Handmade Bridle?

"What exactly is a handmade bridle and why do I need one?" may be a question you ask yourself when you see Saddler's post about their handmade bridle work. The Making Process Firstly, everything is cut, prepared and stitched by hand, hence the word 'handmade'. Preparing the Leather A Saddler selects a leather hide, brushes it and checks for scratches, stretch marks and any other imperfections that could affect the overall strength, durability and look of the bridle. The leather is cut into strips using one of three Saddler tools; a plough gauge, a strap cutter or the round knife. The edges are rounded off by shaving them with an edge shave tool and then stained with a coloured edge dye, usually to match the colour of the hide. A creasing iron is warmed and run along the edge of the leather to form an imprinted line which has been traditionally done on bridle work and saddlery for decades. The Making of An Original Stirrup Handbag

The Making of An Original Stirrup Handbag

You may have already seen the Stirrup handbag for sale over in my online shop. Its design had been swimming around in my mind for a little while. You should have gathered from the website, by now, that all my items are handmade using traditional saddler skills and techniques. With this in mind, I thought it would be nice to show you how I made this bag. The Design Usually I get a design for a new product pop into my head when I am doing something totally unrelated to work. In this case I had the stirrup handbag come to mind when I was cleaning my horse's saddle. I was removing the stirrup irons from their leathers ready to give them all a good clean, when whilst holding the irons in my hand. The idea of being able to hold the irons through the stirrup leather's hole came to me. When I had a moment to myself, I quickly sketched out the design in my...

Designing Equestrian-Themed Bags

Designing Equestrian-Themed Bags

Since starting my leatherwork journey all those years ago I have been passionate about designing bespoke equestrian-themed bags. The Stirrup Handbag Most recently, I designed the Stirrup bag, which depicts the shape of an English stirrup iron. Hand cut from natural russet leather. The design is carved and tooled to form the shape and definition of a stirrup iron, by hand. The stirrup design is painted in acrylic silver. Also the middle of the stirrup design is stained in a deep black dye to finish the look. Before the bag is constructed the front panels are lined in a beautiful black suede. Finally, the black soft leather gusset is handstitched in a silver waxed linen thread. Horseshoe Barrel Bag Last year, I made the Horseshoe Barrel bag as my entry to the 'President's Choice' class, at the National Saddlery Competition, in London. I had previously received a pair of very old bowls bags that were in desperate need of repair and restoration. Whilst the bags...

Best Selling Product Expands

As you may have read back in September 2018, the Stirrup Keyring was one of my best selling products. Well, this year I thought I'd enhance the collection by adding another colour to the range... NEWMARKET TAN Saddlers know this colour of leather as 'London Tan'. However, I tend to refer to it as Newmarket Tan as it reminds me of the infamous Newmarket racing blankets that racehorses wear. Introducing the new Stirrup Keyring I personally love this colour and therefore have chosen to introduce it to my accessories collection for the forthcoming year. With some new and exciting products coming this year I definitely want to make them in this colour, so if you love this colour as much as I do, then watch this space. The Newmarket Tan Stirrup keyring will be going live on the website next weekend on Saturday 1st February 2020. BRASS OR NICKEL The only choice you will need to make is whether you go for the brass stirrup iron or the...
